Choosing a Professional Video Production Company Over the CEO's 'Artsy' Nephew

A photographer went to a socialite party in New York. As he entered the front door, the host said 'I love your pictures - they're wonderful; you must have a fantastic camera.' He said nothing until dinner was finished, then: 'That was a wonderful dinner; you must have a terrific stove.'

Every video production company has experienced this scenario:

A company approaches you to develop a new corporate video. You develop a concept, figure out exactly what it is that will make the project special and then pitch it to the client in a meaningful way. You walk away from the pitch feeling like you nailed it. Your strategy was on target, your creative was unique and memorable; you couldn't have done anything more. A few weeks later, you get a call from someone in the marketing department saying how impressed they were with your presentation and creative work, however, the CEO decided to go with someone else — someone she knows. The "artsy" nephew (or cousin, or college roommate, or baby sitter).

This person will certainly be cheaper than hiring a professional company, but rarely is their work remotely near the quality of professionals. Having the equipment doesn't make you qualified. Having the experience, strategy and desire to make great work makes you qualified.
