Last month Chris, Red and I traveled to Roatan, a small island of Honduras, for the second part of a documentary project we have been working on with GCG Marketing. We have the privilege of telling the stories of several doctors who are giving their time and resources to help those in need. To say we were humbled by this experience is an understatement; we are so excited to tell these stories and showi others how much can be done with the gift of your time.
Roatan is a tiny island in Central America, one of the most sought after scuba diving locales in the world. When you arrive on the island you are immediately struck with the contrast between the rich and the poor. One end of the island is packed with five-star resorts, beautiful beaches and avid scuba divers who have traveled from all over the world to soak in the beauty of this part of the world. However, if you travel a mere 2 miles from these lavish resorts and you are immersed in people living in slums, surviving on next to nothing. To see the way these people had to live was heartbreaking, yet to see their zest for life and determination to make the best of their situations was inspiring. We had the privilege to capture the spirit of these people as well as the wonderful things being done to help them by the doctors on the trip. Each morning two clinics were set up, one for general medicine and another that focused on dermatology. Since these people have spent their entire lives in the sun and on the beach, skin conditions are running rampant. The team of doctors and nurses were able to do simple things that changed the way many of these people had been living for years. Providing medication, small surgeries and relief by answering plaguing questions that some had been waiting years to ask. This was the first time many of these people had seen a specialist of any kind, some the first time they had received any sort of medical care.
We left inspired and impassioned to tell these stories, to show the great things being done by so many to improve the lives of people living in poverty. Until we are able to show you a finished product, we have created a short video from Red Productions perspective. There are also pictures both from our trip to Roatan as well as the previous trip to Honduras on our facebook page.
